Field trip to Porthleven/Loe Bar
Please register now if you would like to attend the fieldtrip to Porthleven/Loe Bar on Saturday morning 12 July, star
ting at 10.30 and ending about 1.30. Please send your name(s), emergency contact details, and if you need an RGSC hard hat to Beatrice beatricekerno@yahoo.co.uk. Once registered, you will receive the joining information. The fieldtrip is free to members, £5 each for non-members. Under 16s need to be accompanied by an adult.
The leader is Dr Sam Hughes, the Cornwall Geologist, whose amazing photos are often reposted on the RGSC Facebook pages. You may remember Sam from a super (but rather wet) fieldtrip he led to Carn Galver a couple of years ago. The fieldtrip will consider Cornwall’s tectonic story including the impact of global tectonics; we will study structures in the rocks and learn how the land is shaped by changing tectonics through time. We will also consider the changing climate through Cornwall’s recent geological history, how this has shaped the landscape today, and what we can learn about how
this may impact the region’s future.
We will be walking about 2.5 miles over the 2-3 hours. The terrain includes gravel tracks, coast paths, shingle beaches, and uneven, rocky terrain. There is up to approx. 50 m elevation change. (Sam’s rating is ‘Suitable for ages 10+ with some hiking experience. Requires a decent level of fitness. May impact those with illnesses or disabilities that impact fitness and mobility.’) Sam, formerly senior lecturer at Camborne School of Mines, is now running his own company, which you can find out more about at on this link https://www.cornwallgeologist.co.uk/.
